A Day of Rain

We’d planned to go to Waimea Canyon yesterday, which is called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, but there was a very rare day of drizzle and high fog here, so the Canyon was socked in. Instead we drove around to the west side of the island and walked on the beaches there. Still no slouch of a day!

Ni'ihau from the west side

The picture on the right shows some intrepid swimmers and surfers; there was a high surf warning yesterday. In the distance on the left is the high cliff of Ni’ihau, the Forbidden Island, which is not open to visitors except on a limited basis. It’s inhabited by about 130 full-blooded Hawaiians and is about 17 miles off the coast of Kauai. The island was sold by King Kamehameha IV in the 1860s to a Kauai resident, whose ancestors still own and operate the island. Hawaiian is the language spoken.

On the far right is a small peak of another island, which is uninhabited. And as far as I can tell, it doesn’t have a name.

Tammie and Jenifer

A piece of trivia: VOG. This is a new word I learned here meaning volcano fog. Kilauea has been “venting” on the big island of Hawaii and causing some air pollution warnings.

OK, off I go to do who knows what today!

  1. It was all damp and rainy the day we went to Waimea canyon–really disappointing. Hopefully you will get some sun. Love the word Vog!! You need to read Mitchners book while you are there! Also we had a great time kyaking! Just like West Virginia without bologne on bread–Toasted!!!
